Tobacco Prevention Resources

Tobacco-related diseases kill more Oklahoman's every year than Aids, Accidents, pneumonia, Suicide, and Diabetes combined. Oklahoma ranks 10th in the nation for both lung cancer and stroke deaths, and 18th in the nation due to coronary heart disease.

Cherokee Nation Smoking Cessation Tobacco Use Prevention Program:

The purpose of the program is to reduce death and disability among Native American people caused by tobacco use. The program provides assistance to those who wish to cease cigarette and smokeless tobacco use with a behavior modification program and supplemented by nictine replacement therapy when appropriate.

Eligibility - Anyone over age 18 who is eligible for Cherokee Nation rural health centers or IHS facilites.

Participation - Participants must actively participate in the 8-week (1 hour) course to receive Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches).

Smoking Cessation class are also offered through the Cherokee County Health Department.

SWAT-Students Working Against Tobacco

Students Working Against Tobacco Abuse. A Teen-driven movement that empowers and unites to resist and expose tobacco lies while changing current attitudes about tobacco.

Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation Tobacco Use Prevention Program has partnered with the Northeast Regional Oklahoma SWAT program to provided techinical assistance and resoucures to local schools that are intreseted in starting a SWAT program.
